Date: Friday 4th June

Time: 10am - 11am

Facilitator: Scott Haines, Community Partnership Manager, Shannon Trust

Did you know that according to current research, it is suggested that around 16.1% of the population struggle with their reading and can be described as having ‘poor literacy’?

Over the past 20 years, Shannon Trust has successfully worked in prisons across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and currently support around 4,000 people a year to improve their reading. Their approach involves training and supporting mentors/volunteers to teach those that can’t read in regular 1-2-1 sessions. These are delivered using an evidence-based resource called Turning Pages.

Shannon Trust and WDP have recently agreed to launch a number of in pilots in which these sessions will be available in a small number of WDP services. Scott Haines from Shannon Trust will be joining us to talk a bit more about this exciting new partnership, and to look at how WDP volunteers and peer mentors will be able to get involved.

A Zoom invite for this event has been to sent all volunteers. If you have not received an invite, please email [email protected] and we will send you the Zoom link.
